Neutralization Reactions

Cards (4)

  • A neutralization reaction is a chemical reaction where an acid and a base react to form an ionic compound (salt) made of the acid's anion and the base's cation, and water. the pH become close to 7
  • neutralization reactions are double displacement reactions
  • another type of a neutralization reaction is when a carbonate base reacts with an acid. the products will usually be carbon dioxide, water, and an ionic compound of the acid's anion and the bases cation
  • Some applications are:
    • Chemical spills - In 2007, a train derailed and spilled sulfuric acid into the Blanche River. The water upstream was treated with calcium oxide to neutralize the sulfuric acid
    • Stomach Antacid - Your stomach holds hydrochloric acid which is needed for digestion. when it's irritated, an antacid (like tums) may provide relief by neutralizing it
