  • used vauxhall cresta- british car- wanted to establish themselves as a contemporary British band, 1962 car- better times, harking back to the idea of more jobs in britain, band showcasing the idea of 'why are we not helping people, everything shutting down',
  • 'all the bars have been closed down' also the scene of throwing stones into the river- angry young men,
  • Thatcher- deindustrialisation- closing down industry- she put through a lot of new ideas and passed a lot of new laws, we also have a speech 'Britain was being swamped by non white people' when she was elected in 1979, 'swamped'- irony, she was actually previously supportive of the wave of influx of people coming over as well as conservatives to rebuild after WW2, juxtapositioning of political ideas in contrast to stop and search laws against black and asian men, led to rise of far right groups,
  • Lyric and visual- direct address to gov- 'leaving youth on the shelf' social political and economic, socially breaking down societal groups- vandalised cars,
  • opening shots of looming towers- low angle shots, east london dockland area- docks in 1970s and 80s were a massive hub for industry- making a statement about it, shots of city of london- bank of england shot- the financial district- wealth, power, they are trying to represent wealth and power is where the privelage is, communicating these people are not the elite
  • shadows on the wall near vandalised properties of people fighting , people lacking agency in the 'ghost town',
  • driving recklessness- young men with energy without jobs without financial means- colour pallette contrast, things used to be good- used to be life there- now no future due to political decisions and prejudice
  • tunnel setting- todorov- taking us on guided tour of deprivation- glimpse into future of what could be if governments do not change,
  • mise en scene- horror genre- thriller- driving recklessley- British social realism- trying to show what British life is like with a sense of realism,
  • British social realism- not trying to americanise, gloomy melancholic colour pallette, social message through lyrics, deprivation through ghosts on the wall,
  • the futility of their journey is confirmed by closing shot of the group throwing stones into the River Thames
  • the hypnotic chanting of the line 'this town is coming like a Ghost Town' expresses a nightmarish vision of the world and the wailing chorus suggests we should be incredibly frightended by the prospect of this distopian future- the lyric 'can't go on no more' is particularly sombre.
  • the tone of despair is supported by the band's performance inside the car, eg during the first verse, their body language is so stiff and their facial expressions are lifeless, nightclubs are supposed to be places where young people can meet and have a good time, but 'all the clubs have been closed down' so they are muted or dead.
