• France was suffering greatly in the Depression. Edouard Daladier, president of France for much of the 1930s, found it difficult to concentrate on the threat from Hitler with so many problems of their own
• There was no way France could have afforded to act aginst Hitler without the support of Britain
• France is the traditional enemy of Germany
