Feedback mechanisms and tipping point

Cards (7)

  • A feedback system is a change in one environmental condition causing a change in another
  • Negative feedback is when an environmental change causes another change that decreases the rate of the initial change, this establishes original equilibrium
  • Increased low level cloud is an example of negative feedback, higher temperature causes further evaporation and aids in condenation of clouds, this prevents sunlight and decreases albedo effect
  • Positive feedback is when an environmental condition causes other change of a factor that increases the rate or amount of original change
  • Soil decomposition, ocean acidifaction and melting permafrost are all positive feedback
  • Tipping point is the concept that human actions have causes changes in natural processes in which are causing climate change to the extent that stopping the original human actions cannot just be stopped as it would not stop climate change
  • Tipping point is where changes due to human activity is so severe that if humans stop the activity the change would still occur
