  • The nurse is responsible for ensuring that the patient's needs are met.
  • Backrub (no more than 5 min.)
    • during evening, after baths
    • ask if they need/want one
    • slow/moderate motions=relax muscles
    • motion: strong, firm strokes(up/down)
    • if tired, stop
    • skin assessment before proceeding
    • pt uses decubitus ulcer patches= need more circulation, need backrubs
    • bony prominence=knead red areas at stage 1
  • Backrub
    1. take off gown
    2. move pt to 1 side(in 3 segments)
    3. cross ankles of pt
    4. logroll to lateral
    5. place bath towel near back
    6. use warm lotion
    7. lots of lotion on back(assessment)
    8. circular motions on buttox, up neck, pull down with fingertips(circulate blood up to heart, down-relax muscles)
    9. lotion on arms and hands
    10. dab off excess lotion with towel
    11. clean gown for pt
  • Reasons for no backrub
    rash, lung/heart disease, back surgery, refusal
  • backrub can be delegated by nurse
  • backrub= have person in lateral or prone
  • bedbath
    water temperature: 105-110 degress F(warm)
    for hot: 115 F
  • bedbath for face
    1. warm water in water basin
    2. allergic to soap, use personal soap
    3. face w/o soap
    4. mitted towel(tucked in)
    5. from in to out for eyes
    6. maneuver towel to clean side
  • how many washcloths used
    2-3
  • 1 washcloth for: face, head, chest, back
  • 1 washcloth for: lower legs and feet
