  • By geographical location in ethnic traditions, the availability of materials has led to the development of wide range of art forms that are closely tied to local materials and resources.
  • Visual Arts: different types of creative expressions that you can see with your naked eye. Like paintings, sculptures, and drawings.
  • Visual arts: a way for people to communicate and make the world meaningful and more interesting.

  • The Angono Petroglyphs: Situated in Binangonan, Rizal. It was discovered by National Artist, Carlos “Botong” Francisco in 1965. There are 127 human and animal figures engraved on the rock wall and dated back to circa late Neolithic.
    1. Manunggul Jar
    ➢ Found in Manunggul cave, Lipuun Point, Palawan in the early 1960s. It is a burial jar which signifies the belief of early Filipinos in life after death.
    1. Banga
    Banga literally means pots. The pot dance is a performance of Kalinga in the mountain province of the Philippines. This dance shows the elegant grace of Igorot tribe and strength of women
  • 2.   SPANISH COLONIAL TRADITION: Spaniards replaced indigenous arts with western forms during colonization.
  • 2. SPANISH COLONIAL TRADITION: Religious and secular literature, theater arts, and dances became prominent. Introduction of Western musical instruments and proliferation of zarzuelas and operas.
  • Zarzuela: a type of musical theater that originated from Spain. It combines singing, acting, and often dancing to tell a story. Spoken dialogue and musical numbers crating a blend of drama and music.
  • Zarzuelas: can range from comedic to serious and are often performed in Spanish-speaking countries
  • An example of zarzuela in the Philippines is "walang sugat" (no wound): composed by Fulgencio Tolentino and libretto by Severino Reyes. It is set during the Philippines revolution against Spanish-colonial rule
  • walang sugat is about two brothers one is a revolutionary leader and the other one is a loyal soldier to spaniards and both ofthem is inlove with one girl.
  • Operas: dramatic performances where the story is entirely sung. Combination of vocal performances, orchestral music, acting, and often elaborate stage sets and costumes.
  • Spanish influenced painting, sculptures, and architecture with intricate designs.. Despite western influences, Filipino artists retained their own touches in their art.

  • AMERICAN COLONIAL CONTEMPORARY TRADITION: Americans took over after more than 300 years of Spanish rule. After more than three centuries of Spanish colonial rule, the Philippines came under American control following the Spanish-American War in 1898. This transition marked a significant change in governance and administration for the country, as it shifted from Spanish influence to American colonial influence.
