    An ideology and belief that property belongs equally to everyone. Everyone should earn the same amount of money whatever their job. Equality for all. The state owns property and businesses.
  • What is ideological incompatibility?
    The idea that the ideologies of Communism and Capitalism are opposites to each other and cannot work together. They are incompatible.
  • capitalism
    An ideology and belief that private individuals should own property and businesses. People earn different amounts of money depending on their job and skills. Some people are very wealthy, some live in poverty.
    • Who were the big three?
    The USA, the USSR (Russia today) and the UK. They worked together during WW2 to defeat their common enemy of Hitler.
  • What was agreed by the big three at Yalta (1945)?
    Germany when defeated would be reduced in size, the USSR would declare war on Japan, the UN would be set up, and Poland would be under the USSR’s ‘sphere of influence’.
  • What was agreed by the big three at Potsdam (1945)?
    Germany to be reduced in size and divided in to four zones run by the USA, USSR, UK and France, Berlin also to be split in to four, the Nazi Party would be banned.
  • Why did the big three’s grand alliance end?
    With their common enemy of Nazi Germany defeated, tension rose as there was nothing to keep them together anymore. Ideological incompatibility! President Roosevelt who was friendly with Stalin also died in-between Yalta and Potsdam.
  • How did the atomic bomb raise tension?
    The USA created the atomic bomb and used it on Japan in 1945. They did not share this technology with their ally the USSR.
  • What were the Long and Novikov telegrams?
    Secret reports. The Long Telegram reported to President Truman that the USSR saw capitalism as a threat, the USSR was building its military power, and peace between Communist USSR and Capitalist USA was impossible. The Novikov telegram reported to Stalin the same about the USA. The Cold War had begun!
