    • 1873 - severe droughts, 1874 - floods. These both negatively impacted/ led to the decline of the Ottoman Empire
    • Rebellions in the Balkans
    • Serbia declares independence from the OE
    • Sept 1876 - Great Powers sent an ultimatum to the OE to sign a 1 month truce
    • Oct 1876 - Russia supports Serbia and sends an ultimatum to the OE
    • Pan Slavism
    • Russia threatened by Austria-Hungary
  • 19th Jan 1878 - The OE calls for an armistice during the Russo-Turkish War, but Russia ignores it.
    31st Jan 1878 - Armistice agreed
  • March 1878: Treaty of San Stefano - Peace terms after Russo-Turkish war. This gave Russia a substantial amount of money and territory as well as independence for Montenegro, Serbia and Romania
  • July 1878: Treaty of Berlin. Altered the terms of the Treaty of San Stefano as Great Powers weren't happy with the original terms. The Tsars' fear that the original treaty would upset the British and Austria-Hungarians led him to accept the new treaty. This made things worse for Russia and led to unrest.
  • Russia's success in the Russo-Turkish War was seen as a victory for Pan-Slavism and boosted the prestige of the Tsar
  • The Russo-Turkish War did bring a financial crisis and the collapse of the rouble
