Homeostasis

Cards (12)

  • Homeostasis is an organisms ability to regulate its internal conditions.
  • Regulate the body's internal conditions:
    Internal body temp
    Blood sugar levels
    CO2 levels
    Water levels
  • Its important to regulate our bodys internal conditions so that our enzymes and cells functions well.
  • If conditions are not optimal, then our enzymes denature (change shape).
  • When enzymes denature this reduces the enzymes ability to catalyse metabolic reactions.
  • 3 parts of the control system:
    Receptors
    Coordination centre
    Effectors
  • Coordination Centre - receives information from receptors and sends out instructions to effectors.
  • Effector - responds to the coordination centres message by changing something in the body.
  • Receptor - detects changes in the environment or inside the body.
  • Effector - responds to signals sent by the coordination centre.
  • Examples of effectors include muscles and glands.
  • The coordination centres can be found in the brain or spinal cord.
