In 1851 the DakotaSioux moved to a reservation - 24millionacres of land in return for $1.4million and $80000 a year
2. However the Sioux owed $200000 to traders and so the governemt would notgive them any money until they paid it back
3. Therefore, they had nomoney for food and supplies - the reservation was notbigenough to produceenoughfood so they left the reservation to hunt - they were notmeant to do this
4. therefore the reservationagentrefused them any supplies as punishment - so conditions got worse
5. the localtraders and agentscheated the Sioux and chargedveryhighprices - therefore, they got into moredebt
6. therefore they were made to signawayhalf of their reservation to the US - this meant that it was evenharder to growfood - therefore in 1862 they were starving and having to eatgrass
7. in 1862 the USarmy was fighting the Civilwar - therefore, LittleCrow decided it was time to takeback what they felt was theirs - they took food and burntdownagencybuildings and attackedsettlers and forts - around 600killed
8. therefore, the USsoldiers were sent to capturethem - 400 were put on trial and executedwithout any evidence of guilt
9. the rest of the tribe were moved to a muchsmallerreservation in verydrylands - therefore many of them starved to death in the firstwinter
