Cards (8)

  • 10. Fort Laramie treaty of 1851 guaranteed the IP large amounts of land - however, when gold was discovered in 1858 prospectors started to cross their territory - as a result, the buffalo was disrupted and the tribe went hungry
  • 11. therefore, in 1861, some tribe members agreed to move into reservations - however, the warrior brotherhood Dog Soldiers did not agree to this - Therefore, for 3 years they fought the prospectors
  • 12. therefore, Black Kettle and the gov tried to come to an agreement - however, the territories governor ordered Colonel Chivington to ' kill and destroy them'
  • 13. therefore Chivington attacked Black Kettle's camp , killing women and children even though they were waving white flags to surrender - Chivington cut body parts off and displayed them in the local saloons
  • 14. Black Kettle managed to escape during the massacre - therefore, he told everyone what happened and the Dog Soldiers attacked the settlers across the territory - the US gov couldn't do much as there weren't that many US soldiers on the plains (they were fighting in the civil war)
  • 15. therefore, the gov promised the IP large reservation and compensation for the Sand Creek Massacre if they would stop the attacks
  • 16. however once the civil war was finished, the gov went back on their promise - therefore the IP were moved to smaller reservations and no compensation was paid
  • this created distrust between the IP - this meant they don't negotiate but fight with the US - lead to the Red Clouds War
