    • confidentiality is the trust that any personal information will be protected
    • deception is where a participant is not told the true aims of a study and thus cannot give informed consent
    • informed consent is where participants must be given information regarding the nature and aims of the study so that they can decide if they want to participate or not
    • privacy is a persons right to control the flow of information about themselves
    • protection from harm means that participants should not experience negative physical or psychological effects during a research study
    • right to withdraw means that patients should be allowed to leave the study at any point and to have any of their data destroyed
