Heredity and Environment

Cards (7)

  • Reciprocal determinism
The idea that the environment affects a person, and then the person reacts to it, thus changing the environment
  • Epigenetics
Environmental pressures can change the activity of genes (e.g. some genes get turned off due to environmental pressures, and the next gen inherits those genes turned off)
  • Polygenic
Multiple genes (i.e. when something is caused by multiple genes it is this)
  • Diathesis
Related psychological disorders; many disorders have a genetic predisposition and an environmental trigger
  • Maturationism
Related to development; all children develop the same way in the same order, that is genetic, but when or if they do so is related to environment
  • Plasticity
The idea that the brain changes and arranges itself in response to what is happening in its environment
  • Epigenetics changes your genes, plasticity changes your brain structurally
