  • He saw four sights : an old man a sick man a corpse and a holy man
  • This made him realise that old age and death were inescapable and led to him permanently leaving the palace on a search for enlightenment.
  • The symbol of Buddhism is a wheel with eight spokes
  • The circle reminds Buddhists of belief in rebirth. They  believe that the cycle of birth, death and rebirth is endless.
  • This is called samsara. The only way out of samsara is by achieving nirvana or enlightenment.
  • The eight spokes of the wheel represent the eightfold path. Eight guidelines the Buddha gave his followers to live by.
