Distillation with addition is used to achieve incomplete oxidation (i.e. to achieve an aldehyde).
In distillation apparatus, only the oxidising agent is heated. The alcohol is slowly added to the oxidising agent, and when the aldehyde is formed, it immediately distils off and is collected in the receiver.
