  • competitive inhibitor molecules have a similar shape to that of substrate molecules
  • they compete with substrate molecules to bind to the active site, no reaction takes place
  • they block the active site so no substrate molecules can fit in
  • inhibitor molecules bind to the active site of an enzyme and prevent the substrate from binding
  • how much an enzyme is inhibited depends on the relative concentrations of the inhibitor and the substrate
  • if there's a high concentration of the inhibitor, it will take up nearly all of the active sites and hardly any of the substrate will reach the enzyme
  • if there's a higher concentration of substrate the substrates chances of getting to an active site before the inhibitor increases.
increasing concentration of substrate increases rate of reaction to a point.
