Permanent and Induced Magnets

Cards (16)

  • What are the two poles of a magnet?
    North and South
  • What do magnets produce?
    Magnetic fields
  • What are magnetic fields?
A region where other agents or magnetic materials experience a force, this fore is non-contact
  • How can a magnetic field be shown?
    Using magnetic field lines:
  • What direction do magnetic field lines always go?
    North to south
    • The closer together the lines are, the stronger the magnetic field
    • The further away from a magnet you get, the weaker the field is
  • Where is the magnetic field strongest?
At the poles of a magnet. This means that the magnetic forces are also strongest at the poles
  • How do two like poles act?
    Repel
  • How do two unlike poles act?
    Attract
  • How does a compass work?
    • They contain a tiny bar magnet
    • North Pole of magnet is attracted to the South Pole of any other magnetic it is near.
    • So the compass points in the direction of the magnetic field it is in
  • What happens when compasses aren't near a magnet?
    • They always point north.
    • This is because the Earth generates its own magnetic field
    • which shows the core of the Earth must be magnetic
  • What are the two types of magnets?
    • Permanent
    • Induced
  • Permanent magnets?
    Produce their own magnetic field
  • Induced Magnets?
Magnetic materials that turn into a magnet when they're put into a magnetic field
  • What is the force between permanent and induced magnets?
    Always attractive
  • What happens when you take away the magnetic field from induced magnets?
They quickly lose their magnetism and stop producing a magnetic field
