diminished responsibility

• diminished responsibility is contained in s2(1) homicide act 1957 and was updated and amended by the coroners and justice act 2009
• diminished responsibility is a special defence which means it is only applicable to murder
• diminished responsibility is a partial defence which means it reduces the conviction rather than acquits the defendant
• diminished responsibility reduces the sentence from a mandatory life sentence to a discretionary life sentence
