• sun emits short wave infared radiation and is absorbed by atmosphere
• some waves are reflected back as long wave (infared) radiation
• waves are trapped by greenhouse gases in atmosphere which radiates heat back to earth warming it
• green house gases such as carbon dioxide and methane trap heat in the atmosphere
