Conformity : types and explanations

    Cards (4)

    • internalisation ? (ISI)

A deep type of conformity where we take on the majority view because we accept it at correct . Leads to far-reaching and permanent change in behaviour , even when the group is absent .
    • One strength of normative social influence ( NSI) is research support
Evidence supports NSI as an explanation of conformity . When asch interviewed his PTs , some said they confirmed because they felt self-conscious giving their correct answer as they were afraid of disapproval. When PTs wrote their answers down , conformity fell to 12.5% . This is because Giving answers privately meant there was no normative group pressure . Showing that some conformity is due to a desire not to be rejected by the majority mf or disagreeing with them (NSI)
    • one Limitation of NSI is individual differences
NSI does not predict conformity in every case . Some people are very concerned with being liked by others. These people are called affiliators- they have a strong need for affiliation . researchers have found that students who were nAffiliators were more likely to conform . Showing that NSI underlies conformity for some people more than it does for others . There are individual differences in conformity that cannot be fully explained by one general theory of situational pressure
    • Identification ?
A moderate form of conformity where we act in the same way as the group because we value it and want to be part of it But we don’t necessarily agree with everything the group / majority believes
