  • Myocardium is the heart muscle, which is strong and thick.
  • Pericardium is a protective sac of connective tissue that covers the heart.
  • Septum is the middle that separates the right and left sides of the heart.
  • Right side of the heart carries deoxygenated blood, while the left side carries oxygenated blood.
  • Atria receive blood from the different parts of the body, while the ventricles send blood to the different parts of the body.
  • Valves guard the openings between the atria and the ventricles.
  • Upper chambers and lower left chambers are separated by a valve called bicuspid valve.
  • On the right side of the heart, the tricuspid valve separates the upper and lower chambers.
  • Aortic valve is the valve that opens toward the aorta, the largest artery in the body.
  • Pulmonary valve is the valve that opens to the pulmonary artery, an artery that goes to the lungs.
  • The heart cycle, also known as cardiac cycle, consists of two heart sounds, "lub-dub".
  • The first sound, lub, is heard when the atrioventricular valves (bicuspid and tricuspid) close.
  • The second sound, dub, is heard when the semilunar valves (aortic and pulmonary) close.
  • The two heart sounds are considered one heartbeat.
  • A healthy adult heart usually beats 72 times in a minute.
  • The heart rate can be heard by an instrument called stethoscope.
  • Electrocardiogram, also known as EKG or ECG, is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart.
  • There are three kinds of blood vessels - artery, vein, and capillary.
  • Artery carries blood away from the heart.
  • Vein carries blood toward the heart.
  • Capillary is the smallest blood vessel that allows only a single pile of blood cell to pass through.
  • The exchange of gases, nutrients, wastes and hormones happens in the Capillaries.
