  Research by Peterson and Peterson

  • Showed participants trigrams , then had to perform an interference task of counting backwards for a few seconds to stop maintenance rehearsal
  • Found after 18 seconds , recall was less then 10%
  • Suggests that unless maintained , information is held in short term memory for only a few seconds ( 18 - 30 ) before it disappears
