Filtration and Crystallisation

• Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid
• Crystallisation separates a soluble solid for a solution
• Filtration step by step

  1. Put some filter paper in a funnel
  2. Pour your mixture into this funnel
  3. The liquid will run through, but the solid will remain on top as residue

  
• Crystallisation step by step

  1. Pour the solution into an evaporating dish
  2. Gently heat the solution
  3. Once you see crystals are beginning to form, take off the heat and leave to cool
  4. Filter the crystals out and leave them in a warm place to dry
