Newsbeat also runs a YouTube channel in addition to its website presence and other social media accounts. This allows a broader reach than traditional radio and is essential for a transitional media product that must try to bridge both traditional media and the multi-platform, post-broadcast era of the digital age.
Newsbeat, a scheduled news broadcast, was launched on Radio 1 in September1973, in response to competition from commercial radio stations.
It has also diversified into short-form news articles on the BBC website and short video content on YouTube and other social media channels, e.g. Facebook, X, and hashtags on TikTok. For this reason, Newsbeat is defined as a ‘transitional’ media product as it continues to be broadcast traditionally as well as through other digital methods.
