density of materials

Cards (8)

  • higher number of particles = more mass
  • you can have the same volume but different mass
  • density = mass (kg) / volume (m3)
  • to get the density of a solid block: mass (kg)
    • find the volume (length x width x mass)
    • weigh the block (find the mass)
    • mass/volume = density
  • solids and liquids are very hard to compress, gasses aren't
  • percentage differences = (calculated value - true value / true value) x 100
  • to find the density of an irregular shaped object:
    • use a balance to measure its mass
    • fill a eureka can (a can with a sprout in it's side) with water
    • place a measuring cylinder under the sprout
    • place your object into the water
    • measure the volume of water that has collected in the measuring cylinder
    • this is equal to the volume of the object
    • use the formula above to find the object's density
  • how do you find the volume?
    length x width x mass
