In 1912, the Birlings celebrate the engagement of Sheila and Gerald Croft. Crofts Limited, is a competitor to Birling and Company, Arthur’s manufacturing business, he believes that the marriage will bring the two businesses together and make a larger profit. Inspector Goole questions the family about the death of Eva Smith, how Arthur fired her from his business a few years before and how Sheila got her fired from her job.
Gerald is asked about Daisy Renton; he admits to having an affair but hasn’t seen her since September. Gerald leaves and Sheila returns the ring to him.
The Inspector says Sybil only saw her only two weeks before, the girl went to the Brumley Women’s Charity Organization for financial assistance. Sybil says that the charity refused to give the girl money because she claimed to be married and she told the girl that her husband should be responsible for paying the child’s bills.
Eric admits he got Eva pregnant and stole money from Arthur for financial support. The Inspector says they all are partly responsible for Eva’s death, but Arthurs only worried about a “public scandal” about the family’s connections to her.
When Gerald returns, he says there is no officer named Inspector Goole and Arthur, says the family has been hoaxed and if no one finds out, they cannot be blamed, Gerald phones the infirmary, and is told that there have been no suicides in months.
Later, they get a call from the police, saying a girl had just died and they were sending someone over for questioning.
