    Cards (11)

    • Who proposed the two explanations for conformity
      Deustch and Gerard
    • the three types of conformity was proposed by
      Kelman
    • Explain what is meant by internalisation (3)
Internalisation is where you accept the majority belief as your own
You change your public and private views
It’s a permanent change as you hold to these beliefs even when the majority is absent
    • Explain what is meant by compliance (3)
Where an individual changes their behaviour to fit in with the group
Even if they don’t agree with it they’ll go along with it publicly
It’s not a permanent form of social influence and lasts as long as the group is present
      ( include e.g for m3)
    • what is meant by NSI (2)
Where an individual goes along with the behaviour of the group
In order to appear normal out of fear of rejection
    • Briefly outline and evaluate NSI as an explanation for conformity (4)
people agree with the opinion of the majority in order to be liked and avoid rejection
This often leads to compliance to the majority , agreeing publicly but dont change their own personal opinions privately
AO3- Asch when interviewed after pps said they conformed to avoid rejection from others
There are individual differences in how much people want to be liked and therefore not all will conform due to this desire
    • State fully the two explanations for conformity
desire to be right - informational social influence
Desire to be liked - normative social influence
    • What is meant by identification
Identification is the middle level of conformity. Here a person changes their public behaviour and their private beliefs, but only while they are in the presence of the group they are identifying with. This is usually a short-term change
    • What is meant by ISI
is when a person conforms to gain knowledge, or because they believe that someone else is ‘right’.
    • Outline ISI as an explanation for conformity (3)
Going along with majority via acceptance of new information
Occurs due to desire to be right
      Confirming for cognitive reasons
      Leads to internalisation
