magnets p7

Cards (6)

  • Flemming’s left-hand rule:

    thumb – Movement
    Forefinger – magnetic Field
    seCond finger - Current
  • Conventional current: positive to negative
    Electron current: negative to positive
  • A device which produces an electric field when an electrical current is passes through a wire is called an electromagnet.
The shape of the magnetic field depends on the shape of the wire.
  • A solenoid consists of a wire coiled up into a spiral shape.
When an electric current flows, the shape of the magnetic field is very similar to the field of a bar magnet
  • A permanent magnet is an object that always has a magnetic field.
The space around a magnet, where it can attract magnetic materials, is called the magnetic field. When a piece of magnetic material is in a magnetic field, it becomes a magnet itself. This is called an induced magnet. It stops being magnetic when it is removed from the field.
  • Like poles repel, opposite poles attract.
