• in stave 1 charity men come to ask for donations, scrooge dismisses them
• in stave 1, the ghost of jacob marley- scrooges old business partner, visits him bound in heavy chains
• in stave 1 marley warns scrooge about what will happen if he doesn’t change and he warns him about the 3 spirits visiting him
