Menstrual Cycle

• The first phase of the menstrual cycle is called the flow phase
• during the flow phase the uterus lining is shed and levels of FSH starts to rise
• The second phase of the menstrual cycle is called the follicular phase
• Ovulation happens on day 14
• in the follicular phase estrogen causes the endometrium to thicken
• Follicular phase: hypothalamus stimulates pituitary gland to release FSH and LH
• Phase three is the Luteinizing phase
• In the luteinizing phase hormones stop egg production
• Luteinizing phase: corpus luteum releases estrogen and progesterone which causes the pituitary gland to stop the production of FSH and LH
