  • Derivation - adding a prefix or suffix to the existing word. example: realization from realize = -ation
  • Back formation - forming new words by extracting the actual or supposed affixes from another word. example; sculpt (sculptor), proofread (proofreading)
  • Compounding - word formed from joining and combining two or more words example: awe-inspiring, claptrap, notebook
  • repurposing - word formed in another context and applying it in another context. example: computer mouse , landlord
  • conversion - transplanting one-word class to another by taking a word. words that serves as a verb as well as a noun. example: friend, WHY DON'T YOU FRIEND ME?

    Words that can serve as a noun as well as an adjective. example: giant, I SAW A GIANT DOG JUST OUTSIDE OUR HOUSE
  • eponyms - word named after a person. ex, alzheimer's disease
  • loan words - english words borrowed from other language. example: Tycoons (Japanese) Deja Vu (french), Tattoo (Tahitian)
  • onomatopoeia - words that produces sounds. example: broom, swish, thud, bang, ding-dong
  • error - misspellings, mishearings, mispronunciation example: scramble originated as a variant of scrabble, but over time they both have different meanings.
  • reduplication - goody goody, healthy skelter, picnic, nitpick, clap trap , dilly dally, hocus pocus. part of a word is repeated
  • blending - taking two or more words removing parts of each and joining the residues together to create a new word whose meaning is taken from the source words. example: webinar, world wide web + seminar
  • Abbreviations: Acronym - words formed by the initials or succession of beginning segments of words. pronounced as SINGLE words. example: radar (radio detecting and ranging) PIN (personal identification number), AIDS, SCUBA
  • Abbreviations: Initialism - building a word from the initial letters. example: USA, UN, DNA, PSA, TBA, FAQ
  • abbreviation: back-clipped - words that lose their four part, removing the world like exam for examination
  • fore clipping - beginning of a word is removed. example: plane for airplane, phone for telephone
  • abbreviation: middle clipping - middle of a word is retained like flu from influenza
  • abbreviation: complex clipping - multiple parts from word is remod as in sitcom from situational comedy and rom com from romantic comedy, sci-fi from science fiction
