  • 17. Gold was discovered in Montana in 1862 - Prospectors developed a short cut (the Bozeman Trail) through he Lakota Sioux hunting grounds, breaking the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 - therefore the angry Lakota tribe attacked the porspectors
  • 18. therefore the government called a meeting to persuade the Sioux to let them travel across the trail, in return for gifts
  • 19. However, just before the meeting, Red Cloud discovered that the army had already bought materials to build forts along the Bozeman Trail (this implied the settlers would be using the trail no matter what) - therefore, Red Cloud decided to fight
  • 20. In December 1866, the Lakota Sioux army of 7000 warriors tricked Captain Fetterman and his soldiers and captured in Fort Phil Kearny - Therefore the US soldiers were trapped and no one could use the Bozeman Trail
  • 21. therefore, the government was forced to negotiate with Red Cloud, they met at Fort Laramie and the second Fort Laramie Treaty was signed
  • 22. the second Fort Laramie Treaty (1868) agreed that the US gov would close the Bozeman trail so prospectors could no longer cross it - in return, Red Cloud took his people to the Great Sioux Reservation (very large) - had the black hills in
