how did the US try to solve settlers vs IP

Cards (3)

  • President Grant put forward the Peace Policy - 1868 - tried to calm tension between IP and settlers
  • good for IP
    • corrupt reservation agents would be replaced - religious men (quakers) would replace them they were fair and peaceful
    • Ely Parker - appointed Commissioner of Indian affairs - would hopefully lead to better relations
    • $2 million was given to the IP so they could live properly on the plains reservations and would set up nice reservations for free roaming IP
  • bad for IP
    • free roaming IP who refused to go to reservations were treated as enemies by the US army and were often attacked
    • Ely Parker - IP should be treated as 'helpless and ignorant wards' gov knows what is best for them
