Human Gas Exchange

• In mammals, gas exchange happens in the lungs. These are highly adapted to have a very large surface area in contact with the bloodstream to sustain a high rate of gas exchange required to maintain a high metabolic rate
• Oxygen and carbon dioxide both move down their pressure gradient, then their diffusion gradient as they enter/leave the lungs
