investigating seed germination

• how do we investigate seed germination?

  • take 4 boiling tubes and put cotton wool at bottom of each one
  • put 10 seeds on top of the cotton wool in each boiling tube
  • tube 1 - water, oxygen at room temperature
  • tube 2 - no water, oxygen at room temperature
  • tube 3 - water, oxygen and low temperature
  • tube 4 water, no oxygen and room temperature
  • leave in there for a few days and observe
• what are these results?

  • germination takes place in tube 1
  • all conditions are needed for germination to take place
  • seeds from other boiling won't germinate - shows seeds need water, oxygen and suitable temperature for germination
