immune response

Cards (13)

  • immune response -> lymphocyte divides by mitosis to produce plasma cells -> antibodies (+ memory cells) -> antibodies join onto antigens of pathogen (are specific to antigen) -> antibodies bind to antigens -> inactivates + destroys
  • what triggers an immune response?
antigens on the surface of pathogens
  • when will a lymphocyte divide?
    if it detects antigens
  • how will a lymphocyte divide?
    by mitosis
  • what will a lymphocyte produce when it divides?
    plasma cells
  • what do plasma cells produce?
antibodies -> then join onto antigens of pathogen
  • memory cells respond immediately and divide rapidly to produce lots of plasma cells -> make larger amount of antibodies + quicker
  • what provides immunity after natural infection or vaccination?
    memory cells
  • primary response is slower + less antibodies produced
  • secondary response is immediate + lots more antibodies produced
  • virus mutates -> body relies on primary response -> may get a cold
  • memory cells also produced when lymphocyte divides
  • is same pathogen infects body, memory cells respond immediatley and divide rapidly -> produce lots of plasma cells + quicker -> immunity after natural infection/vaccination
