• Sodium ion is used in co-transport of glucose and amino acids across membranes. Also in creating the action potential of a nerve impulse.
• Iron ion forms part of the prosthetic group haem allows transport of oxygen as haemaglobin.
• Hydrogen ion determines the pH of solutions controlling the functioning of enzymes.
• Phosphate ions are part of molecules eg phospholipids, nucleotides, ATP
