  • Andrew Carnegie- businessman who made himself very wealthy through vertical integration of the steel industry, also wrote the Gospel of Wealth
  • John D Rockefeller - oil magnate who used horizontal integration to control most of the US oil market by buying out competitors, established the Standard Oil Company
  • J.P. Morgan- the "bankers' banker",shaped American business and made profits that had previously been unimaginable
  • Cornelius Vanderbilt- created the country's first railroad empire by building a railroad connecting Chicago and New York
  • Booker T. Washington- African American progressive speaker who advocated for African Americans to work within the system, better themselves individually, and not to seek equality
  • W.E.B Du Bois- African American intellectual writer who believed that African Americans needed to fight against oppression as a group, wanted social and political integration, higher education for blacks; founded the Niagara Movement which led to the creation of the NAACP.
