• the word literature came from the latin word litera that means letter or written text
• oral literature preserved and handed to generations through word of mouth
• written literature it gets its form through the use of pen and has permanence
• the four reasons on why people write is for

  • to spread knowledge and information
  • to pass on ideas and values and
  • to impact truth accuracy and evaluation
• Permanence- lasting impact of literature
• Universality- appeals to everyone and has no boundaries
• Artistry- appeals to aesthetic
• Intellectual value- stimulates thought
• Spiritual Value - high in morals and lessons
• Style- distinctive expression of the writer
• Suggestiveness- appeals to emotion and stimulate imagination
• Prose is divided into two

• Prose is a discourse that follows the flow of conversation in paragraph form
• Short Story - involving one or more character with a single plot and one impression
• Novel - divided into chapters, has multiple plots and themes
• Legend - narrative about origins
• Play - story meant to be acted on stage
• Fable - story where characters are animals
• Essay - an attempt to express viewpoints and opinion
• Oration - formal treatment where audiences are involved (public speaking)
• Biography - life account written by another person
• Autobiography - life account of own author
