• alveoli - tiny sacs where gas exchange takes place between blood and air
• the lungs are made up of bronchioles, alveoli, capillaries
• bronchiole - smaller branches that lead to alveoli
• chest cavity expands during inhalation and contracts during exhalation
• diaphragm becomes dome shaped during inhalation and flattens during exhalation
• volume of lungs increases and air enters the lungs during inhalation

  and volume of lungs decrease as airs exits the lungs
• pharynx is a common passage for food and air
• larynx is our voice box
• trachea is our windpipe
• the two types of respiration are aerobic and anaerobic
• aerobic respiration takes place is the presence of oxygen whereas as anaerobic respiration takes place in the absence of oxygen
• the end products of aerobic respiration are carbon dioxide and water
• the end product of anaerobic respiration are ethyl alcohol, or lactic acid
• complete breakdown of glucose takes place in aerobic
• incomplete breakdown of glucose takes place is anaerobic
