  • Reading is NOT JUST A BASIC SKILL.
    • Involves learning a continuous set of skills.
    • We acquire more advanced skills in reading.
    • Involvement of Recognizing letters in alphabetical order to infer, analyze, evaluate using critical thinking skills.
    • Likened to playing an online game.
  • Reading is A COMPLEX PROCESS.
    • Process - to undergo a series of stages.
    • Complex - not simple.
    • Growth as readers - start with a basic skill then more advanced as we grow up. Reading is a thing we acquire.
  • Reading is SITUATIONALLY BOUND.
    • "Being good in one reading type does not automatically equate to being good in understanding different types of text."
    • Must explore and expose ourselves to various types of text.
  • Reading is like PROBLEM SOLVING.
    • Likened to a Jigsaw Puzzle - Piece up the letters, words, and sentences to look at the bigger picture.
  • Reading is NOT THE SAME AS DECODING.
    • Decoding - making sense of the text.
  • What makes a Proficient Reader?
    Accuracy and Fluency.
  • Accuracy - ability of a person to UNDERSTAND ANYTHING THAT THEY READ.
  • Accurate Reader - does NOT TAKE A LONG TIME understanding a text.
  • Fluency - ability to READ A TEXT SMOOTHLY.
  • Fluent Reader - SURELY UNDERSTANDS everything he/she has read.
