Osmosis required practical

    Cards (17)

    • Purpose is to explore what happens to chipped potatoes in different concentrations of sodium chloride solutions
    • Prep: label the boiling tubes with the concentration of sodium chloride you will use.
    • Prep: measure out 20 cm3 of each sodium chloride you will use and pour into appropriately labelled tubes.
    • Prep: Dry potato chips on paper towe but don’t sqeeze them.
    • Experiment: Weigh the chips using a balance and record masses ( it is important to know EXACTLY which chip went into each tube)
    • Experiment: the solution should completely cover the chips
    • Experiment: leave for at least an hour ( ideally overnight)
    • Experiment: Remove chips one at a time and dry on paper towel
    • experiment: Reweigh the chips and record the results in the table.
    • Change in mass = End mass - Start mass
    • % Change = ( change in mass?/ start mass ) X 100
    • Equipment: 0 (Distilled water), 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 M sodium chloride solutions
    • Equipment: 6 Boiling tubes
    • Equipment: Paper towel
    • Equipment: cork borer cut potatoes
    • Equipment: Top pan balance ( scale)
    • Equipment: Pen and Paper
