  • These were show trials of people accused of revolutionary activities . At the 'Trial of 193' a sympathetic jury acquitted 153 of the 193 defendants and gave only light sentences to the restThe defence lawyers' passionate speeches were reported in the press giving publicity to the revolutionaries' ideas.
  • Vera Zasulich who sympathised with some of the accused then shot and seriously wounded the governor of St Petersburg Dmitri Trepov. She was also not found guilty at her trial in 1878.
