  Movement of substances from lower to a higher concentration (against the concentration gradient), it requires energy from respiration.
• Each branch of a root will be covered in millions of microscopic hairs, these give plant a large surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions.
• Plants need these ions for healthy growth.
