  • LINE- Is the FOUNDATION of all DRAWING, It is the FIRST and MOST VERSATILE OF THE VISUAL ELEMENTS OF ART.

    HORIZONTAL LINE- Distance and Calm
    VERTICAL LINE- Height and Strength
    JAGGED LINE- Turmoil and Anxiety
  • THE WAY WE DRAW LINE CAN CONVEY DIFF EXPRESSIVE QUALITIES FREEHAND LINES- Express the personal energy and mood of the artist.
    MECHANICAL LINES- Express Rigid
    Control.
    CONTINUOS LINES- Can lead eye in certain directions.
    BROKEN LINES- Can express the Ephemeral or Insubstanial.
    THICK LINES- Express Strength.
    THIN LINES- Express Delicacy.
  • SHAPE- Can be natural or man made regular or irregular,flat (2dimensional).
  • BEHAVIOR OF SHAPES
    1.Shape can be used to control your feelings in the composition of an artworks.
    2.Squares and Rectangle can portray STRENGTH & STABILITY.
    3.Circles and Ellipses represent Continuous Movement.
    4.Triangles can lead the eye in upward movement.
    5.Inverted Triangle can create sense of Imbalance & Tension.
  • TONE- Is the Lightness or Darkness of a color.
  • COLOR- Is the Visual Element that has the STRONGEST EFFECT on our emotions.
    ORIGINAL COLOR+WHITE= Tints
    ORIGINAL COLOR+GREY=Tones
    ORIGINAL COLOR+BLACK=Shades
  • PATTERN- Is made by REPEATING or ECHOING the elements of an artwork to communicate a sense of balance.
  • 2 BASIC TYPE OF PATTERN
    NATURAL PATTERN- Often based on the Inspiration we get from observing natural patterns that occur in nature.
    MAN MADE PATTERN- Used for both Structural and Decorative purposes.
    note: both can be regular and irregular, organic or geometric....
  • TEXTURE- Surface Quality of an Artwork, THE ROUGHNESS and SMOOTHNESS of the material.
  • OPTICAL TEXTURE- Artist may use his/her skillful painting technique to CREATE ILLUSIONS OF TEXTURE.
    PHYSICAL TEXTURE- Artist may paint with EXPRESSIVE BRUSHSTROKES whose texture convey the Physical and Emotional Energy of both Artist and his/her subject.
    EPHEMERAL TEXTURE- Third Category of Texture whose fleeting forms are subject to change like CLOUDS,SMOKE,FLAMES and LIQUIDS.
