Enzymes

• substances that fit loosely into an enzyme's active site to stop the normal substrate from fitting are called inhibitors. they don't get broken down and inhibit normal enzyme activity
• digestion is the breaking down of large insoluble food molecules into small soluble molecules that can be absorbed by the blood using enzymes
• The process in which The process in which small soluble food molecules are transferred from the gut to the blood system is called absorption.
• main groups of enzymes:

  • carbohydrase (amylase) - starch to glucose
  • protease - protein to amino acids
  • lipase - fats to fatty acids and glycerol
