• Homeostasis is the maintenance of steady conditions in the body
• The body maintains a constant internal environment, including temperature and blood glucose concentration
• Homeostasis ensures optimal conditions for enzyme action throughout the body and all cell functions
• Automatic control systems for homeostasis may involve nervous responses (nervous system) or chemical responses (endocrine system)
• The human nervous system consists of:

  • The central nervous system (CNS): the brain and spinal cord
  • The peripheral nervous system: nerve cells that carry information to or from the CNS
