3.1.1 Monomers and Polymers

• Monomer - Smaller units from which larger molecules are made
• Polymer - Molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together
• Examples of monomers - monosaccharides, amino acids, nucleotides, glycerol
• Condensation reaction - Joins two molecules together with the formation of a chemical bond, removes a molecule of water
• Hydrolysis reaction - Breaking of a chemical bind between two molecules, involves the addition of a water molecule
