Sweat is collected using Pilocarpine Iontophoresis.
Sweat is tested for the levels of Sodium & Chloride.
A normal value of Sweat Chloride is less than 50mmol/L.
Values of Sweat Chloride greater than 60mmol/L are indicative of cystic fibrosis.
A borderline value for Sweat Chloride is between 50-60mmol/L.
Sweat is used to diagnose cystic fibrosis.
Signs and symptoms of cystic fibrosis include bulky offensive greasy stools, noticeably salty sweat, frequent respiratory infections and chronic cough, malnutrition, and male infertility (obstructive azoospermia).
Methods used to test for cystic fibrosis include the Cotlove chloridometer, microtitration with Mercuric Nitrate, CF Analyzer, and Chloride electrode method.
