LDV Economy Growth

• Social Positive effects:

  • approximately 4,000 new homes to be constructed along LDV
  • EIS encouraged local people to become more active
• Economic Positive effects:

  • 1p in every £1 in Sheffield City region can be traced back to Meadowhall
  • 1 in every 100 local jobs can be traced to Meadowhall
• Economic Negative effects:

  • Sheffield City Centre struggles to compete with variety of retail outside of city centre, leading to a downturn (decline in economic/business activity) in city centre
• Environmental Postive effects:

  • improvements to canal - open to tourism + leisure. Fishing = popular again
  • Supertram connects Rotherham to Sheffield (opened 2018) - reduces cars on roads
  • Sheffield Development Corporation planted over 160,000 trees and shrubs
  • more developments on brownfield sites (abandoned land awaiting new use)
  • Cycle + walkway introduced along River Don, running length of the valley. 5 Weirs Walk
• Economic Negative effects:

  • rise in congestion in area, especially for routes towards the M1
